When a CO2 laser machine is not firing, the laser power supply is often the first component to be suspected. However, the fault may also come from the glass laser tube, cooling-water protection, controller signal, wiring, grounding or optical system.

Before ordering a replacement CO2 laser power supply, check the machine step by step and record the fault symptoms. This can help avoid replacing the wrong component.

1. Check the CO2 Laser Power Supply

A faulty CO2 laser power supply may cause:

  • No laser output
  • Weak or unstable laser power
  • Intermittent firing
  • Abnormal noise
  • Burning smell
  • Visible damage around terminals or cables
  • Failure to trigger the laser tube

Turn off the machine immediately if you notice smoke, burning smells, damaged high-voltage insulation or visible electrical arcing.

An aging or damaged glass CO2 laser tube can also cause weak output or no laser emission.

The power supply must be correctly matched to the laser tube’s rated power. An incorrectly selected power supply may cause unstable operation or affect the service life of the laser tube.

3. Check the Cooling and Water-Protection System

Many CO2 laser machines include a water-protection circuit. If the required protection signal is open, the power supply may not receive permission to fire.

Check:

  • Whether cooling water is circulating
  • Whether the chiller displays an alarm
  • Whether the flow switch is operating
  • Whether the water-protection wiring is secure
  • Whether the relevant protection terminal is connected according to the power supply diagram

Do not bypass the water-protection circuit to continue operating the machine. Running the laser tube without adequate cooling may cause serious damage.

4. Check the Controller and Power-Control Signal

The machine controller sends the firing and power-control signals to the laser power supply. Missing, unstable or incorrectly connected signals may prevent laser output.

With the machine switched off, check:

  • Control-terminal connections
  • Laser-enable signal wiring
  • Power-adjustment signal wiring
  • Safety-interlock connections
  • Loose or damaged control cables

Terminal definitions vary between power supply models. Always refer to the wiring label or technical documentation for the specific model instead of connecting wires by color alone.

5. Check External Wiring and Grounding

Loose terminals, damaged insulation, incorrect wiring or poor grounding may cause intermittent firing, unstable output or no laser emission.

Inspect the following with the machine disconnected from AC power:

  • AC input connection
  • Protective grounding
  • High-voltage cable insulation
  • Laser tube return connection
  • Signal-terminal wiring
  • Water-protection connection
  • Burned, loose or discolored connectors

Reliable grounding is essential for electrical safety and stable control. Ask a qualified technician to inspect the installation if the grounding condition is uncertain.

What If the Laser Output Is Weak?

Weak laser output does not always mean that the power supply is damaged. Other possible causes include:

  • An aging laser tube
  • Dirty mirrors or focusing lens
  • Incorrect optical alignment
  • Low power-control input
  • Abnormal cooling-water temperature
  • Incorrect matching between the power supply and laser tube

Check the optical system, cooling condition and control settings before replacing the power supply.

When Should the CO2 Laser Power Supply Be Replaced?

Power supply replacement may be necessary when:

  • The enclosure or terminals show visible damage
  • The power supply produces smoke or a burning smell
  • The high-voltage cable insulation is damaged
  • Laser output remains unstable after external wiring has been checked
  • The power supply repeatedly fails to trigger a correctly matched laser tube
