How to Match a CO2 Laser Tube with the Right Power Supply

2026 07/31

A glass CO2 laser tube must be used with a compatible high-voltage power supply. The correct match helps the laser machine operate reliably and reduces the risk of weak output, unstable cutting, ignition problems or premature tube failure.

Choosing a power supply based only on the wattage printed on its label is not enough. Laser tube power, permitted operating current, power supply output range, input voltage, control signal and terminal configuration should all be checked before installation.

Why Correct Matching Matters

CO2 laser power supply converts the machine’s AC input into the high voltage required to excite the gas inside a glass laser tube.

If the power supply output is insufficient, the tube may not reach the required laser output. This can result in weak engraving, incomplete cutting or unstable laser firing.

Using an oversized power supply may also create risks if its output current is not properly limited. Excessive current can shorten the service life of the laser tube or damage it.

For this reason, the power supply should be selected according to both the tube wattage and the tube manufacturer’s permitted operating current.

CO2 Laser Power Supply Output Reference

The following table lists the maximum output parameters currently used for the corresponding Zhenyu power supply models.

Power Supply Model Maximum Output Voltage Maximum Output Current
50W 24 kV 20 mA
60W 26 kV 24 mA
80W 28 kV 26 mA
100W 30 kV 30 mA
120W 32 kV 32 mA
150W 35 kV 38 mA
180W 40 kV 40 mA
Important: These are maximum power supply output values, not recommended operating currents for every laser tube. Always check the tube manufacturer’s rated or recommended current before setting the laser current.

What to Check When Matching the Tube and Power Supply

1. Check the laser tube wattage
Start with the rated power printed on the glass laser tube label. A 100W laser tube normally requires a power supply designed for the corresponding power range.

However, tubes sold under the same nominal wattage may have different lengths, current limits or operating characteristics. Wattage should therefore be treated as the first selection factor, not the only one.

2. Confirm the permitted operating current

Check the laser tube manufacturer’s recommended working current and maximum current.

The selected power supply should be capable of driving the tube without exceeding this limit. Correct current control is especially important for maintaining stable output and protecting the tube.

3. Confirm the AC input voltage

Check whether the laser machine uses:
  • AC 110V
  • AC 220V
The input voltage of the replacement power supply must match the machine’s electrical supply. Do not connect a power supply to an incompatible input voltage.

4. Compare the control signals

The machine controller sends control signals to the laser power supply. Before ordering a replacement, check the control terminals and signal type used by the existing system.

Common functions may include:
  • Laser enable
  • Test firing
  • Power adjustment
  • Ground connection
  • Water-protection signal
Terminal names and layouts can differ between power supply models. They should be checked carefully rather than matched by wire colour alone.

5. Compare the wiring terminals

Take clear photos of the old power supply’s input, control and high-voltage terminals.

Check:
  • Terminal layout
  • Connector type
  • Control-wire positions
  • High-voltage cable connection
  • Grounding point
  • Cooling fan direction and available installation space
A power supply with the correct wattage may still require wiring adjustments if its terminal layout differs from the original unit.

6. Check the application and working conditions

The machine application can also affect power supply selection. Information such as the material being processed, working time, cooling condition and required output stability can help determine the suitable model.

Typical applications include:
  • CO2 laser ngraving machines
  • CO2 laser cutting machines
  • Acrylic cutting equipment
  • Wood engraving machines
  • Leather cutting machines
  • Fabric cutting equipment
  • Sign-making machines
  • Packaging-material cutting machines
Information to Provide Before Ordering

To confirm a suitable CO2 laser power supply, prepare the following information:

1. Laser tube wattage
2. Photo of the laser tube label
3. Photo of the old power supply label
4. Machine input voltage
5. Photos of the wiring terminals
6. Laser controller model
7. Laser machine model
8. Available installation dimensions
9. Main cutting or engraving application
10.Description of the existing fault, if replacing a failed unit

Providing this information is more reliable than selecting a replacement based only on the old power supply’s external appearance.

Replacement Support

When replacing an old or unavailable laser power supply, send us clear photos of:

1. The old power supply label
2. The laser tube label
3. The input and control terminals
4. The high-voltage connection
5. The installation space

Jinan Zhenyu Electronics (ZYE Laser)can compare the available information and recommend a suitable replacement model. Final installation and current settings should be verified according to the laser tube and machine requirements.

Installation and Safety Notes

CO2 laser power supplies generate hazardous high voltage.

Installation, wiring and testing should only be carried out by qualified personnel. Disconnect the AC power before handling the power supply, and allow sufficient discharge time before touching the high-voltage connection.

Make sure that:
  • The power supply is correctly grounded
  • The high-voltage cable is properly insulated
  • The cooling system is operating normally
  • The water-protection circuit is functional
  • All terminals are secured before testing
  • The laser current does not exceed the tube manufacturer’s limit
Never touch the laser tube electrodes or high-voltage connection while the system is powered.

FAQ

Q1: Can I use a higher-wattage power supply with a lower-wattage CO2 laser tube?

It is not recommended unless the output current can be properly limited and the combination has been technically verified. Excessive current may shorten the laser tube’s service life or cause damage.

Q2: Is laser tube wattage enough to select a power supply?

No. Wattage is the starting point, but input voltage, permitted tube current, control signal, terminal layout and installation space should also be checked.

Q3: How can I replace an old CO2 laser power supply?

Provide photos of the old power supply label, laser tube label and wiring terminals. The replacement should be checked for electrical output, input voltage, control compatibility and installation dimensions.

Q4: Why does a CO2 laser have weak output after replacing the power supply?

Possible causes include incorrect power matching, insufficient current, incorrect control wiring, poor grounding, tube ageing or cooling-system problems. The complete laser system should be checked.

Q5: Can the replacement power supply be selected by appearance?

No. Different power supplies may have similar housings but different output parameters, control signals and terminal arrangements.
