CO2 Laser Power Supply or Laser Tube: Which One Is Failing?
 
When a CO2 laser machine stops firing or produces weak output, the power supply is often suspected first. However, similar symptoms may also come from an ageing laser tube, interrupted control signal, water-protection circuit, cooling problem or optical-system condition.
 
Replacing the power supply without checking the complete system may therefore fail to solve the problem.
 
Start with the Actual Symptom
 
Record exactly what happens before deciding which component has failed:
 
  • Does the laser produce no output at all?
  • Is the beam present but weaker than before?
  • Does the output fluctuate during operation?
  • Does the test function work while the controller cannot fire the laser?
  • Are there unusual sounds, smells or visible marks?
 
A short video and a clear description of when the problem occurs can be more useful than simply reporting that “the laser does not work.”
When the Power Supply May Be Suspected
 
A power supply problem may be considered when there is visible damage, a new burning smell, abnormal noise or unstable operation around the power supply.
 
However, these signs are not a complete diagnosis. Loose connections, incorrect input voltage, poor grounding and interrupted control signals may produce similar behaviour.
 
If smoke, melted insulation or electrical discharge is observed, stop using the machine and disconnect it from the mains. Internal inspection should only be performed by qualified personnel.
 
When the Laser Tube May Be Suspected
 
Gradual output loss can be associated with an ageing laser tube, especially when cutting or engraving performance has declined over time.
 
Before blaming the tube, also check the cooling condition, mirror cleanliness, lens condition and machine settings. Contaminated optics or poor cooling can reduce processing performance even when both the power supply and laser tube are operating.
 
Check the Control and Protection Conditions
 
If the power supply’s test function can fire the laser but the machine controller cannot, the problem may be related to the controller signal, wiring, settings or protection circuit rather than the main high-voltage output.
 
A running water pump does not automatically confirm that the water-protection signal is reaching the controller or power supply correctly.

No. Weak output may also be related to the power supply, cooling system, optics, settings or incorrect matching between the tube and power supply.
