The test button on a CO2 laser power supply can produce laser output, but the machine controller may still fail to fire the laser during a job. This specific symptom helps narrow the investigation because manual test mode and controller operation do not use exactly the same command path.
A successful test indicates that the power supply can generate an output and that the laser tube can respond under that condition. It does not confirm that the controller command, safety-permission signal or external control-input section is working correctly.

Is the Controller Requesting Laser Output?
Start with the controller rather than the high-voltage section. Confirm that the controller is actually running the job and requesting laser output.
Check whether:
- The correct processing layer is enabled
- The assigned laser power is above zero
- The machine is running rather than paused
- An alarm or warning is displayed
- The problem occurs with every file or only one job
If the controller is not requesting output, changing the power supply will not correct the problem. Review the job settings and controller status first.
Is a Safety Condition Blocking the Command?
A controller may appear to run normally while the laser remains disabled by a protection condition. Depending on the machine design, this may involve cooling status, a cover interlock or another machine safety input.
Look for alarm messages or abnormal status indicators. If a warning remains active, identify its cause before continuing.
Do not bypass the protection circuit to force laser output. That removes an important safety function and may also hide the original fault.
Does the Command Reach the Power Supply?
If the controller shows normal operation and no protection warning is active, the next question is whether its firing command reaches the power supply.
A qualified technician should inspect the low-voltage signal path using the documentation for the controller and power supply. Possible problems include a damaged signal cable, a loose connector, loss of the common signal reference or a previous wiring change.
The terminal names and triggering logic can vary between power supply versions. A wire should not be moved based only on its color or its position on another model.
What If the Signal Reaches the Power Supply?
If the correct external command reaches the power supply but the laser responds only to the local test button, the power supply’s external control-input section may require further examination.
This conclusion should only be made after confirming the controller command, protection status and signal path. Replacing the power supply too early may leave the actual controller or wiring fault unresolved.

A short fault record can make remote assessment more useful. Prepare:
- A video showing manual test and controller operation
- Controller model and displayed status
- Power supply model and label
- Clear control-terminal photographs
- Details of recent repairs or wiring changes
